Offshoring economics.

ATLANTA, GA / Feb 1, 2005 / Atlanta Business Chronicle -- Offshoring can save companies a lot of money, and it has been embraced by many companies, including Atlanta's EarthLink Inc. But Madhu Ankarath, CEO of Atlanta based Trans Atlantic Systems Inc., a provider of information technology staffing, consulting and offshoring services, believes the recent devaluation of the U.S. dollar could have profound effects in countries that count on the dollar being valuable for profit margins. In India, for example -- where much of the United States sends its IT jobs -- its rupee has generally gone up in value since October while the dollar has declined about 20 percent. "That could very well be the death knell of small offshoring companies," Ankarath said. "That is the margins they operate under -- between 20 to 30 percent profit." And if an overseas offshoring vendor decides it is not profitable, it might pull out of the deal, Ankarath said. "That's a very, very real consequence," he said.
